Thank you. Couldn't love this more. It seems Little Women is to me, what it is to you and I felt exactly the same about the new version and had also avoided it.
I also loved it ... but then these characters are so wonderful, I realised it would be impossible not to love them all over again. (She says reaching for her copy of Little Women/Good Wives)
LITTLE WOMEN always has been & will be one of my guiding lights, but what I'm here to say is that Susan Minot's "Lust" shook me when I read it at sixteen. Continues to loom large over my fiction (& probably beyond).
I really relate to feeling like a sheltered author, as someone who never really had a rebellious teenage phase and who didn’t go crazy in college. I often wonder if my writing will sound authentic to people when I’ve lived and experienced so little. It’s quite hard to see merit in your work when you feel like every word you write is speculation.
I hear what you are saying. But I think there is still so much to write about because no one else has your perspective on life. They don't see things the way you do, you know? I don't think having a wild youth is the only way to find meaningful things to say! You can be rebellious now, just on the page :)
