It’s Time To Enter Your Devotion Era
How to create a writing life that nourishes you, not depletes you.
This perspective shift changed everything for me—and it’s also the foundation of The Wild Draft, my upcoming novel writing cohort for writers who want to create from a place of alignment, not pressure. (More on that later!)
I used to think discipline was the key to writing a novel. That in order to get the work done, I needed to adhere to a level of rigidity— do the same thing every day, no matter what. Keep pushing. Keep going. Hustle.
Or rather, write every day. Sit at my desk at the same time every day. Write 1000 words no matter what. Get through this damn draft.
And while these writing sessions did allow me to get words on the page at times, I didn’t find my practice sustainable. If I missed a day, I felt guilty. Sometimes the practice felt heavy despite my desire to work on the project. Some days, my ideas would feel stalled, and I’d realize I was incredibly burned out.
But as I’ve grown in my writing life and learned to be more in tune with myself and my body, I realized I was operating from a very masculine line of thinking. And that self-discipline I thought I was practicing was actually more like self-abandonment. I was overriding my actual needs and rhythms, deeming it “strength” and “resilience” when it was disconnection.
As a woman, I live on a more cyclical rhythm.; therefore, this masculine “grind it out” mindset was not serving me in the long run.
The key, I realized, was to move through my writing life with devotion rather than discipline.
So what is the difference?
On the outside, they might look the same. But this mindset adjustment feels totally different.
Remember, your self-talk can do wonders. The way you think about yourself and your life can actually change the way you experience it. Neuroscience backs this up: your brain literally rewires based on repeated thought patterns, so changing your self-talk isn’t just a mindset shift—it’s a way to reshape your reality.
Here is an example. I could say, “I’m going to discipline myself to write every day.”
But devotion sounds like this: “I’m becoming devoted to a creative practice that actually feels good to live and that adds to my life, not takes away from it.”
Instead of disciplining yourself to write a novel, what if you chose to devote yourself to exploring your story on the page? You choose to devote yourself to a project where you seek to explore your deepest questions, desires, fears, wants, and creative expression.
Devotion doesn’t mean waiting around for inspiration to strike. It means committing to your work in a way that’s attuned to your energy, not forcing it from a place of guilt or grind. Devotion is also a softer approach, which means it’s not something you perfect. It’s something you return to.
Because the truth is, for so many of us, writing has become another source of pressure. Another to-do list. Another place we feel behind. But your creativity doesn’t thrive in survival mode—it thrives when you feel safe, connected, and supported.
Lately, I’ve been talking a lot about my novel writing cohort, The Wild Draft, but it is because I’m so excited to bring this type of energy to an intimate space of writers who are tired of feeling depleted or frustrated with their writing practices. Who not only want to write the story that has been mulling around in their brains and taking up space in their heart, but who also want to honor themselves with the gift of a sustainable and fulfilling creative practice.
This cohort is designed for the writer who’s ready to leave burnout behind and build a practice rooted in devotion, not deprivation. We meet bi-weekly to give you breathing room, time to integrate what you’re learning, and space to write at a pace that feels sustainable. The structure I’ve created will help you finish your first draft—yes, really!—but in a way that honors your creative rhythms and inner voice. You’ll walk away not just with pages, but with a practice you can return to again and again.
Let this be your invitation to enter your devotion era.

What a beautiful way to approach consistency!! I've been doing this subconsciously, because I couldn't subscribe to the grinding mindset, and I didn't a way to verbalise this way of thinking! Sending this to all my writer friends! 💗
Oh, how I want to participate in this, but I have a time-and-money problem. Fortunately, I already sort of have your mind-set and don't push myself too hard. I am still hooked in to the Find Your Perfect Agent project, Kailey....I hope. I need more comps, and they can't be read overnight....so that's my rather pleasant project at this time. Your course sounds WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL.
