How to Be an Embodied Writer
Writing with your whole self — body, mind, and soul.
Since starting my YouTube channel, I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to share your work in a way that feels authentic. Not chasing algorithms (no thank you!!), but building deep connections through story and presence. I’ve been picky about which YouTube leaders I learn from, as, like most things, there is so much information out there, and it's easy to feel like I’m drowning in too many opinions.
One of my favorite YouTube leaders is Brenda Turner. She talks about building a business on YouTube from a very holistic, authentic, and sort of spiritual approach, where her goal is to help you get rich inside and out. She is more about “what can I offer the world today that will really, truly help,” as opposed to “how can I get views.” She is amazing.
One of her recent podcast episodes really struck a chord with me, not just about business but as a writer.
She discusses how it's not by accident that you have a call to put your work out into the world. It's a sacred calling. A cry from deep within your soul to share your gifts and talents, and in our case, our writing.
And with this calling comes a deeper question:
“What is being asked of me in this moment in time, in this moment of my life?”
Brenda says it's a chance for us to rise to the occasion and “be the fullest embodiment of a teacher or leader on a daily basis.”
That idea, being the fullest embodiment of a teacher or leader, lit something up for me, and I began to think about it in terms of my role as writer.
What does it mean to show up as the embodied writer I want to be? To live in a way where my creativity isn’t separate from me, but part of my entire being?
If I’m being called to write, which I am, and I know that you are too, then how can I embody the writer that I am on a daily basis?
To me, being an embodied writer means bringing my whole self — body, mind, heart, and rhythms — into the creative process. It’s about aligning my writing life with who I am.
Brenda explains further that in these dark times, the most powerful and uncommon thing we can do is bring the light that we have within us into all that we do. And in order to do that, we have to get honest with ourselves about any habits that could be blocking us from fully experiencing ourselves as fully embodied writers.
I loved this so much because it reminded me of how ingrained my creativity is in my entire being. That makes me feel so excited! To be a writer, not just in the literal sense of I have written a book and essays and now this newsletter. But it's in my soul. It's part of the light I have to offer to the world.
It also further validated why I feel so passionately about talking with women about how honoring their natural cycle and rhythms can greatly impact their writing life for the better. As naturally intuitive beings who care so deeply about our writing life, it only makes sense to honor it on a bodily level.
That is why I’m excited to offer my latest workshop, happening THIS THURSDAY, Writing in Flow: Create in Tune with Your Natural Rhythms.
In our two hours together, I’ll walk you through each of the four phases of the menstrual cycle and give more details on how to use each phase in your creative life. We’ll do guided prompts, energy-tracking exercises, and by the end, you’ll leave with a personalized creative plan for the month ahead as well as a connection with like-minded creative women.
This is your permission to develop a deeper sense of trust in your body and voice and help you become the embodied writer you were meant to be.
